I was hiking with our painting group, high in the Smoky Mountains, when I saw this man talking on his phone. Subsequently, he almost fell off the horse, which makes me wonder what kind of disturbing conversation it must have been. I do like the pretty little horse. You never know what you'll see in the mountains.

This little guy just turned 10, but we all remember him as he was in this painting, when his best buddy was a horse. He is still quite the character, and tomorrow I am going across the state to see him. He gives some very impressive hugs, and never fails to make me laugh.

I was driving with my daughters on a back road near Ocala, Florida when I saw this scene. It was so peaceful, and the hanging moss gave it even more of an air of serenity. Some of the best horses in the world are bred in Florida's horse country.

The Farrier, Watercolor, 20x28

This is a blast from the past, one of my rare watercolors. I still like it. Working people make wonderful subjects; in fact, I did a whole series of them as a commission once. I think this is my only painting where the rear end of a horse figures prominently, but I hope your eye is drawn to the hardworking farrier.

I've been working on this all week. Quite a change from my previous post, isn't it? This was a very complicated painting of a cowboy in downtown San Miguel de Allende, resting against a wall. This is not a daily painting, except in the sense that I painted it every day. San Miguel is so colorful, and it's not just the locals. The Americans are pretty colorful too. Supposedly there are 17,000 expatriate Americans living there. The locals are hospitable, the climate is lovely, the city is beautiful, and medical care is cheap (and if you drink the water, you may need medical care).
