The Farrier, 16x20 Watercolor Equine Art

I am primarily an oil painter, but I enjoyed doing this watercolor. I suppose it's unusual to have a horse's rear end be prominent in a painting, but I loved the farrier's pose.

Quillyfish

These little fish are for the Just Another Fish on the Wall exhibit at the Fifth Avenue Gallery in Melbourne on April 4th. The technique is called Quilling, hence my title, "Quillyfish." I look forward to seeing what the talented artists around here make for the exhibit.

The amazing Harriet Tubman escaped slavery and returned to rescue 70 enslaved people, including her family, via the network of activists and safe houses known as the Underground Railroad. During the Civil War she was the first woman to lead an armed military operation in the country, the raid on Combahee Ferry, in which over 700 slaves were freed.

To borrow from Shakespeare: "Though she was but little, she was fierce."

The centers of Zinnias are so interesting. I grew some beautiful Zinnias this year, and after many distractions, interruptions, and the holidays, I finally got this painting finished.

 We were on the Pineda Causeway, crossing the Indian River, when we saw this. It looked the same in every direction. Hurricane Idalia was raging on the western side of the state, and we got this. We were very lucky once again. Other parts of Florida were not so fortunate.

Studebaker Trucks

 

 I saw these old trucks when visiting friends in Crawford County, Indiana, a place which is pure Americana. It has rolling hills, forests, the Ohio River, rusting vehicles, and very nice people. It also has a vibrant arts scene, I'm happy to say.

This is a scene from the colorful Renaissance Fair in Brevard County, Florida. I love seeing the costumes, and two standout events were a rock 'n roll bagpiper and a dance around the Maypole. Not just a traditional dance; you haven't lived until you've seen Renaissance characters in costume do the Chicken Dance.

My daughter's cat Gamble was guarding the garden hose when I took her picture, and the light falling on her was the inspiration for this painting.

Hurricane Gift, 10x8 Original Oil Painting, Florida Beach

I call this "Hurricane Gift" because even a terrible storm can yield something beautiful. This driftwood was on North Captiva Island, Florida, and was the result of a hurricane years ago. Now the island is recovering from Hurricane Ian and debris is everywhere after that hard hit. Their lush growth will return, just as it always does.

I am told this is a Chickadee. I thought he was irresistibly cute, and he is the first thing I have painted since my bout with Covid. I started another painting a couple weeks ago, but wasn't feeling that well yet. Before I got very far into it I realized it was a "scraper," a painting so disappointing that I scraped it off the canvas. I am very happy with this one.

I had not painted outside in two years, so this was quite a challenge. It was one of those paintings I had to improve upon in the studio. It was exhilarating to be outside in beautiful weather, painting with my friends.

 This day the beach was just bright and hot, and I couldn't think of anything else to call it. The composition is essentially stripes with figures, and you can just feel how hot it is out there.
