This is an out-of-the-way spot in Alaska, a little town called Talkeetna, which sits at the base of North America's tallest peak, Denali. This cafe was rustic, beautiful, and served delicious food.

From My Sketch Journal: Alaska

Toward the end of my journal I painted various places I have been in the world, just for fun. This was from our trip to Alaska. What a happy memory. That's Mt Denali in the distance and Fireweed in the foreground. We stopped in this area and my cousin Billy and I picked berries. To top it off, the beautiful Alaska train went by.

There are so many interesting characters in Alaska. This man was a Llama Keeper, and he had an air of mystery about him. I mean, really? Llama keeper in Alaska?

I took a photo of the man in the year when we drove around the United States. From Seattle we went to Alaska and stayed with my cousins Bill and Louise. It was another world. Visiting glaciers, Iditarod dogs, camping in Seward, picking blueberries in Denali Park. Very different from the Space Coast of Florida. I had to sleep in a sleep mask because it was still daylight at midnight. That will seriously mess you up.

This is a much-photographed scene in Alaska, and since it was July, I got to see Fireweed everywhere. They are the spiky blooms in the foreground. My cousins took us all over Alaska in an RV one summer, and I can only say it is an astonishing place. It's a good thing I took a sleep mask, because it was daylight at midnight. It's so weird to go to bed when it's still daytime outside. In spite of that and the rough winters, there is a lot to love about Alaska.
