One of my favorite dramatic lighting conditions is what we have been having the past few weeks: a dark and threatening sky as a backdrop, with a bright, sunny foreground. In this case, the sailboat might want to get to port as quickly as possible. After our big Florida drought, we should be thankful for all the rainstorms.

After my last painting, which was quite complicated, I felt the need for a painting that freed me up, so I selected this from my bouquet. This is a very "floral" week, with Mother's Day flowers and visiting Bok Tower Thursday with the Pieces of Eight painting group. I grew up a few miles from Bok Tower, and when I was young the Big Three tourist attractions were Silver Springs, Cypress Gardens and Bok Tower. Of course, Disney changed all that. Bok Tower has no thrill rides, just beautiful gardens and a gorgeous building. Below are a few pictures from our very pleasant day.

This is a lonely, moody scene. What is the woman thinking? Whatever it is, she is finding solace in the movement of the surf and the magnificence of the sea. This is a peaceful painting, in spite of the wave action; the sound of the ocean can be very soothing.  

Red Rock Crossing, 10x10 Oil on Canvas

This is Cathedral Rock again. After we went in the right direction to look for good views, we found this scene, and I hung out over the river to get this shot. A few minutes later we found THE view that is photographed more than any other rock formation in Arizona (see my post on May 29th titled "Cathedral Rock"). Today's painting is smaller, but that did not make it any easier to paint. There is a lot going on there, and I even eliminated the swimmers I saw braving the icy waters.

Nighttime at the Loveless Cafe, 8x6 Oil on Canvas Board

I feel very good about finally getting something out of the evening I spent at the Loveless Cafe, trying to get a table. It just wasn't going to happen, as we realized when a busload of people was unloaded and paraded in before us. We gave up for the night and had breakfast there the next morning. We can't leave Nashville without our Loveless Cafe ritual. The place has been there since the 50s, and is attached to a funky old motel that now has shops in its rooms. The Loveless is known for its biscuits and jams. Yum.

My friend Mary and I were sketching in the park, and this was such a typical pose for her. I enjoyed painting this from a photo I took that day.

Paris Crosswalk, 7x5

I looked down from my hotel window in Paris and saw these businessmen, briskly walking across the street. They presented a challenge in foreshortening, but I really like the point of view. I'm wondering what the guy on the left has in his backpack. Workout clothes? Lunch? Work papers? I'd like to think it's a bottle of wine, a hunk of bread, and some delicious French cheese.
