"Anything Goes," Decoupage on Violin

This violin was a major bone of contention in my family for generations. My Aunt Bea wanted one of us children to play it, and she managed to be mad at three generations because no one was interested. The instrument's shape is so beautiful, I decided to make it into a piece of art. I used old sheet music. and some of it had turned a wonderful sepia color. The music book covers were even better. Decoupage is as much fun as collage, and a lot easier! Turns out it wasn't a great violin, and would have tortured any poor child trying learn on it. This is a much better use.

Jazzman, 6x8 Oil on Canvas Board

Just as I was beginning to think that the only music we would hear in New Orleans was country or rock and roll, we came upon this guy. He was New Orleans to the core, so we finally had an authentic experience.

Janis Joplin, 8x6 Oil on Canvas Board

I can't look at this portrait without thinking of "Me and Bobby McGee," which was released after Janis's death. She seemed to have a great time when she was singing. How did brilliant talent and drugs ever get so intermingled? I'll never understand it. I like seeing her happy like this.

Amy Winehouse, 8x6 Oil on Canvas Panel

How sad that Amy Winehouse died before producing more great music. I never tire of listening to her while I'm painting, and I was so hoping she'd get better and do more albums.

Seems Like Old Times, 5x7 Collage

My friend Cindy gave our painting group a challenge: collage. This was so much fun to make. It's just a little nostalgia.

And to bring us into the 21st Century, my husband and I watched, with the naked eye--or should I say four naked eyes-- the Space Station pass over this morning. Just amazing.

Rain Lilies, 8x10 Collage

I really like sheet music in a collage, and I had these rain lilies blooming in my yard, so it was a natural progression to blend them into a collage. Or maybe I should call it Mixed Media? Anyway, the song is "I'm Always Chasing Rainbows."
