This painting was done in response to a challenge to paint with three primary colors and white. Every color was mixed from those three colors. Yes, I did long to grab my handy-dandy tubes of Permanent Green Light and Sap Green, but I resisted.

Our painting group, Pieces of Eight, has a challenge each month. My waterlily is for October's challenge, done early because I will spend much of October in Europe. September's challenge is to use patterns from nature, and may be viewed online here.  Each challenge is uploaded in the Pieces of Eight blog on the last day of the month.

This collage is made entirely of paper torn from magazines and fixed to a canvas panel with liquid medium. It makes me think of a summertime barbecue. I must thank my friend Fay Picardi for finding all those beautiful pink pictures in a fashion magazine. They were perfect for my watermelon.

Apple on Pink, 6x8 Original Oil Painting Still Life

The Pieces of 8 painting group was practicing painting different objects on different-colored surfaces, and I like this apple enough to finish it; however, I didn't like the background color at all. Since I am busy with my current job, I haven't had time to paint, so I took the above picture, then used Photoshop to try out different background colors. I like this one (below) a lot better than that background color above.

After painting two scrapers (paintings you don't like, so you scrape them off), I decided to do an abstract. Or two. I think I am in one of those artists' funks and I need a vacation. Anyway, an abstract is very liberating compared to trying to decide what's wrong with that nose and is that upper lip too big? When I reached the tipping point on the last painting, the decision whether to keep going or scrape, I realized that trying to save it would be no fun at all. Doing liquid acrylic abstracts was, on the other hand, quite enjoyable though messy. No one will ever see what used to be on that canvas.

Here is my acrylic skin technique on black. It is like collaging with paint skin, and just as messy as paper collage. Perhaps I could combine the two? Hmmm...

I love painting with oils, but now and then I digress and chase intriguing shiny objects. This one is, literally, shiny. The heavy lines are metallic gold paint.

Cosmos, 16x12 Watercolor

I don't do many watercolors, but I take them with me when traveling. When I saw resident artist Judith Kinsman painting in the garden at Hidden Pond Resort in Maine, I hurried there with my watercolors to paint the beautiful Cosmos flowers. People told me I would see fall colors in Maine, but instead I saw sunbathers and lush flowers. It was a joy to meet Judith and paint with her. Artists are really nice people. They aren't all like Picasso.
