5-Day Challenge, Day 5: Big Ole Vidalia, 5x7 Oil on Panel

This is the final day of the challenge to paint a small artwork in 20 minutes. So happy that #ArtWorkLivingChallenge has done this online exercise. People did some beautiful things in a measly 20 minutes! It makes you have to plan and think, instead of just jumping in. Thanks, Mary Gilkerson.

50 Strokes of Chicken 5x7 Small Daily Painting Oil on Canvas

Our group challenge for the Pieces of 8 for December is to paint a painting using only 50 strokes. For those of us who have trouble simplifying, this is a great exercise. You have to think about each stroke and make it count. For areas like the ruff around the chicken's neck, I used one zigzag stroke for each color. That covered some territory with one stroke; however, the dot that is the eye is also just one stroke. At the end, it is hard to stop because you want to do just one or two more--but you must resist!

Oil Painting on Canvas Panel, "Orange Blossom Special," 8x10

I grew up in Central Florida, where the orange was King. There was nothing like walking through a grove in bloom, with the lovely sweet smell of blossoms filling the air. Most adults in my town worked in the citrus industry, including my grandmother, who would walk the half-block to the packing house every day during the citrus season. She had the world's shortest commute. She also had a small orange grove, and in our yard grew avocados, limes, tangerines, loquats, and cherries. I wish I had those things now, especially our huge avocados. We didn't even know what guacamole was back then.

This collage is made entirely of paper torn from magazines and fixed to a canvas panel with liquid medium. It makes me think of a summertime barbecue. I must thank my friend Fay Picardi for finding all those beautiful pink pictures in a fashion magazine. They were perfect for my watermelon.

If I wrote a song about my favorite things, garlic would be near the top of the list. It must be my Mediterranean blood. It's healthy too, which I tell myself when eating delicious garlic knots at my favorite Italian restaurant. I like painting garlic and onions, because they are so layered and interesting.

This was fun. The Elio Camacho workshop inspired us to do 30-minute paintings with our painting group this week; yesterday in my studio I limited my time to ten minutes, and this was one of the paintings I did. I had a piece of canvas that was painted black and had a few spatters on it so I painted on that. I think I will do more food paintings with ten-minute limits. This is such good practice for me to loosen up and have a more spontaneous feel.

It's a lot easier to paint a watercolor with your foot propped up than painting an oil in that position, so this was my result. My broken toe is making little progress but I have graduated from wearing a sock to a flip flop. Thank goodness I didn't do this to myself before I finished my mural!

The Pieces of 8 painting group was challenged by Donna Vines to do collage, and she showed up with a massive amount of beautiful papers for us to use. This was really a fun project, and I love the way the black paper, which had many fibers in it, created fuzzy edges when torn. It gives the bird a feathery look. I guess you'd call this "Barnyard Chic."

This is an appropriate painting for the last week of school. One last apple for the teacher. I like the drama of the deep shadow. This painting looks even brighter in person, so to speak, and is dramatic in its simplicity.

On a rainy day in Georgia the Pieces of Eight gathered around the table to paint beets. The red background was Denette's daring idea, and it has quite a vibration, doesn't it? They were a good subject and quite delicious as well.

Chikins, 5x7 Oil

Chickens are fun to paint. There is something comical about the way they strut around, not unlike the way some people walk. It's nice that the one in back buried its head in the straw so that our attention is drawn to the more colorful lady in front. I'm very pleased with the way this one turned out.
