Italian Girl With Flowers, 11x14 Oil on Canvas, after Sorolla

Sold

I've had no time for painting this week, so I am posting a throwback to 2008, when our painting group, Pieces of Eight, decided to copy Impressionist masters as a learning exercise. I love Sorolla, so I copied one of my favorites, with the above result. Below is the original by Sorolla.

I also copied John Singer Sargent, the master portrait artist. The best thing I've ever done is team up with seven women with the same passion for painting that I have. It has been such an enriching experience in so many ways, and I have learned so much.

Silver Sandals, 20x24, Oil on Canvas

NFS

I painted this a few years ago, when my daughter was getting ready for my sister's wedding. Painting a mural and having Thanksgiving has made my painting time negligible, so I went to the past for this one. What a jolly good time we had at the wedding, which was in beautiful Middleburg, Virginia.

Speaking of Middleburg, they have a wonderful annual Shakespeare festival, "Shakespeare in the Burg," and next year's date is April 2-3. Click here for details:

Sultry, 6x8 Oil on Canvas

SOLD
This all started with a tube of gold metallic paint from Ralph's Art Supply in Melbourne. I needed an exotic subject so I could use the gold. You can't really appreciate the metallic quality looking at it online, but I used it in the medallion on the turban, the earring, and the cloth on her shoulder. I liked the result so much that I'm going to do more.

Leap of Faith, 8x10 Oil on Canvas

This painting just returned from my exhibit and I am now putting it "out there." I find this painting exhilarating, capturing the spirit of childhood and fun. I paint so much that I am forgetting to have other kinds of fun. I need to correct that. I could go jump off a big rock into a river, but Florida doesn't have big rocks. We are as flat as a flitter (whatever that is).

The Graduate, 14x18 Oil on Canvas

The boys were wiggling, but look at the confident look on the girl's face. She is ready for the next step in her road to success.

Girl in the Butterfly Garden, 8x10 Oil on Canvas Panel

How much fun is a butterfly garden? This one had every color of butterfly, including green. The girl's pose really struck me, it is so typical of a young girl.
The dreaded political ad season is upon us and I am disgusted already. I would like to refer politicians (especially those who claim to be saintly) to Proverbs 6:16-19:

There are six things the Lord hates, seven that are detestable to him:

haughty eyes,
a lying tongue,
hands that shed innocent blood,
a heart that devises wicked schemes,
feet that are quick to rush into evil,
a false witness who pours out lies
and a man who stirs up dissension among brothers.

Suzanne, 8x12 Graphite Drawing

I took this one right off my wall, since I haven't had time to paint anything new this week. This is a graphite drawing of my youngest daughter Suzanne. Not for sale, of course.

Accessorized, 6x8

Trendsetters not only accessorize themselves, but their phones as well. I love the polka dots and the headband, too. What fun to be young and not have too much to think about except what to decorate yourself with!

Lindsay, 8x10

This portrait is part of my learning process. I really like painting people doing things, but I'm getting into the more formal portraits also.

Our week has started badly. Yesterday, just as I was about to leave for church, my husband Hap fell from a ladder while trimming a tree. I immediately drove him to the emergency room. He had X-rays, got a splint, etc and they said his heel is crushed. His ankle was tennis-ball size, so we thought he broke that. We have to get with an orthopedist and find out if he needs surgery. So now I get to repay him for taking such wonderful care of me when I broke my wrist. He hasn't lost his sense of humor. He was in absolute agony, but when we drove off to go to the hospital, he told our neighbors, "If we don't come back, watch the Oscars so you can tell us who's wearing who." He finds the red carpet hoopla absurd.

The things you take for granted! I got up this morning and Hap was standing in the kitchen on his crutches just looking at the coffeepot. If anyone can tell us how to walk on crutches with a cup of coffee, please let me know. One's hands are completely occupied with holding oneself upright. I am calling him Hopalong Happity now.
