The Old Barn, Landscape Oil Painting, 12x9

I saw this old barn during an artist's retreat with our painting group, Pieces of Eight. My title is not very original but I can't think of a single clever thing to call it. I long to go on retreat with the Pieces of Eight again, if we ever get out of this pandemic.

Marshland, 8x10 Landscape Oil Painting

I decided to have some fun with this one by first doing a 20-minute painting. The middle one was my work in progress, and last is the finished painting.

Florida Jungle, 10x8 Oil Painting on Canvas Panel

This was a very complicated landscape. I do like the thick and tangled jungle look of Florida woods, and it's always so tricky not to have everything green, green and more green. I'm pleased with the way this one turned out.

Coconuts and Allamandas, 6x8 Original Oil on Canvas Landscape

This is my neighbor's coconut tree, which I have painted many times. I envy them those coconuts! We had a coconut tree until the freeze of 1989, and when it froze I gave up on growing coconuts; if I had only known about climate change then I would have immediately replanted. Now I grow tropical plants and never have one freeze. It's small consolation for the scorching summers.

In the foreground are my allamandas on our purple screen, a bit of whimsy we added to the garden.

The Yellow Swing, original oil painting, 16x20

We are in Lake Junaluska, North Carolina and I am very excited to see rhododendrons blooming everywhere. They are lush and gorgeous, and I have seldom ever gotten to see them because they don’t grow in Florida. There’s nothing like a front porch swing, and the pink rhododendrons make it even more inviting.

Provence Biker, 8x10 Original Oil Painting of the South of France

My sister and I were on our way to Fontaine-de-Vaucluse in Provence when we saw this man on his bike. Except for the very narrow roads, this is a beautiful place to be riding, surrounded by olive groves, vineyards and lavender fields. Though I have many photos of Italy, France and Austria, I just couldn't wait to paint this guy.

Beautiful Azores, 12x12 Oil on Canvas, Landscape of Terceira Island, Azores

My family lived for many years in the Azores, Portugal and it was a lovely place to be, with beautiful scenery and warm, friendly people. They are nine volcanic islands about 850 miles west of Portugal, and we lived on Terceira. Street bullfights were an exciting event, with men holding one end of a long rope and the bull on the other end, charging at people in the street. I learned that bulls can easily run up steps or jump over walls. They also have bullfights in a ring, but never kill the bull.

I think I need to go back for a visit, especially after reading Diana Marcum's book, The Tenth Island, about the Azores. That is what inspired me to paint this.

Kirk and Snickers, 9x12 Original Oil Painting on Canvas

I always say my son-in-law is at one with nature. He has climbed mountains (Kilomanjaro, for instance) and camped in jungles as an archaeologist. He loves hiking in woods with his dog. This picture is so typical of him that I felt I must paint it, because it speaks to friendship between a man and his dog.

Natchez Trace, Original Oil Painting Landscape of National Parkway, 6x6, Beautiful Highway , FREE SHIPPING in US

The Natchez Trace runs from Nashville to Natchez, and its history goes back to prehistoric times. It is a wonderful way to travel through beautiful country, and there is little traffic.

Oil Painting, Indian River Lagoon, 8x10 Daily Painting

I was taking a stroll on Riverview Drive when I saw this lovely view of the Indian River. What a beautiful place I live in. I hope not too many people find out, because it's getting pretty crowded here already.

Florida Vista, 8x6 Original Oil Painting Landscape

I always enjoy seeing a bright strip of sunlight streaking dramatically across a scene. This was on the lonely Highway 60 across Florida. Most of Florida is flat as a flitter, whatever a flitter is. The exception is where I grew up, in Polk County. I used to get out of the lake after swimming all day and pedal my bike up a very long hill. Just my luck to have a hill there!

Natchez Trace, 6x6 Oil on Canvas Panel, Landscape Painting

The Natchez Trace is a beautiful highway that once was a trail tracing back through 10,000 years of American history. We discovered Meriweather Lewis's grave on the Trace, at the site of the inn where he died. There is little traffic and no big trucks on this road that stretches from Nashville to Natchez. It is an American gem.

Northwest Road, 8x6 Oil on Canvas Panel, Landscape Painting

This is a happy memory, from when our nephew, who is quite the outdoorsman and photographer, took us to remote places in the Cascades that tourists don't know about. What an exhilarating place to be! Washington is an absolutely fabulous state to visit and I can't wait to go back.

We are now in the mountains and they are in us, kindling enthusiasm, making every nerve quiver, filling every pore and cell of us.

Everglades Sunrise, 6x6 Oil on Canvas Panel

Sold

This is a nostalgic piece, because it reminds me of camping in the Everglades with two Pieces of 8, Kathy and the recently departed Cindy (no, she didn't die, she just departed for North Carolina). This is a tiny little painting of the beautiful sunrise in the Everglades. I was disappointed to not see Spoonbills, but there was other wildlife: more alligators than I could count, and a huge, thick, black spider that got on my paper towels when I was painting. Thank goodness I noticed him before I grabbed a towel!

We saw no pythons, but a recent python hunt brought forth over a hundred! They are ruining the ecology and hard to eradicate. When small game gets wiped out, large game leaves, and all sorts of things happen in the food chain. Just watch this video, "How Wolves Change Rivers"  and you'll see what I mean.

Clouds in Landscape, 24x18 Oil Painting

The Pieces of 8 are studying clouds, so I did a demo of various kinds of clouds and techniques for painting them, then we all had a good time painting our own. This is one of my larger paintings, and I shall continue my cloud studies, as they are becoming fascinating to me. I've looked at clouds from both sides now...

Sky Drama, 8x6 Oil on Canvas Panel, Sunrise Landscape

I love the dramatic skies we get here. Sunrises are especially fantastic. There is a lot to appreciate about living on the Space Coast of Florida.

This was especially difficult to photograph, and I am still not completely satisfied, but this is the closest I could get. The blue part actually looks darker in the painting, and the bright part brighter. I was very happy with the dramatic effect.

English Roses, 6x6 Original OIl Painting on Canvas Panel

$99, Click to Purchase
This has been very hard to post, because the colors don't look exact on my monitor. I have spent a lot of time trying to get it exact, but it still doesn't satisfy me, and it may look different on your computer. At any rate, this is close, but the sky in the actual painting is warmer than it looks here.

I am putting my list of things that are incredibly frustrating here, as I am losing track of my numbers. My no. 9 is:

Telemarketers, especially the crooked ones with scams. The Do Not Call List is apparently meaningless.

1. Inadequate mental health care since mental health institutions were closed in the 80s (e.g., mass murderers whose parents tried to get help and couldn't). This is, shall we say, crazy in a so-called civilized country and fits nicely with proliferation of guns to form the perfect storm.

2. Pencils with erasers that don't erase, and will even make a brown mark instead of erasing.

3. The rule about not ending sentences in a preposition, as in "not put up with." The English language is being mangled and new words from pop culture are added to the dictionary every year, so the preposition rule seems quite outdated. I do hate the question "Where is he at?" though. It almost deserves to be #4 on my list, it irritates me that much.

4. People driving slowly in the left lane.

5. Airplane passengers who bring carry-ons so heavy they can't lift them into the overhead bin.

6: Deceitful practices in retail stores.

7. Packaging that cannot be opened no matter how you try; its clear plastic taunts you with a view of the completely unattainable product inside, mocking your frustrating attempts at entry.

8. Negative political ads, especially the ones with the low-pitched, sarcastic, gossipy-sounding voice that sounds like they are sharing a nasty little secret about the opponent.

Poinciana, 6x6 Oil Painting on Canvas Panel

$99, Click to Purchase

I just love this road, especially the Poinciana tree, which makes a canopy. It will be beautiful when all the petals fall and make a red carpet too.

I am adding to my list of unjust things we should not put up with.

In the new vernacular, a conversation might be:

" 'Sup?"

"We are going glamping on our vacay."

"Where at?"

Two Palms, 5x7 Original Oil Painting on Canvas Panel

SOLD

Picture this: the weather is perfect, the sun is setting, the view is incredible, the company is great. Ahhh...that is San Miguel de Allende. Sooner or later I will return to painting other locations, but I need to get all this out of my system while I am inspired.

In between all this painting, I am proud to say that I got rid of those darn weeds in my yard. Pulled every last one. Of course, they are starting up again where I started. It's a vicious cycle, but I need the exercise. In San Miguel there was a yard man. Sigh.
